For all of you fans of Sesame Street and more precisely the characters Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, I have a movie recommendation for you and no I am not talking about Follow That Bird. I am talking about the documentary I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story (2014). Caroll Spinney is the puppeteer that plays both Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street. IABB covers Spinney’s life not just as Big Bird and Oscar but also his life before Sesame Street. Starting with when he first became fixated with puppetry as a child to his time on the Bozo The Clown Show and his being discovered by Jim Henson at puppeteering festival which led to his involvement on Sesame Street. It is from here that IABB shows us that Spinney is not just some puppeteer in the Big Bird costume, but that he is Big Bird and that Big Bird is him. We see not just the benefits that the role has brought him but also some of the tough times that Spinney has had to go through and how he was able to overcome them thanks to his involvement with Sesame Street.
I Am Big Bird: The Carrol Spinney Story is a wonderful film – it was so much better than I ever hoped that it could be. It even includes Big Bird’s very moving performance of “It’s Not Easy Being Green” at the Jim Henson Memorial Service. In my opinion this is a must watch for anyone that has ever been a fan of Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch or Sesame Street. For me I Am Big Bird is easily a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
